Immigration New Zealand for Individuals (New Zealand's Point System)
An applicant intending to migrate to New Zealand under the General Skills category is required to pass the points test. The current pass mark is 24 points, which is subject to change weekly (i.e. for one week in September, 2000, the pass mark was increased to 25 points).
Applicants are assessed and ranked according to the number of points they are awarded for qualifications, work experience, age, and settlement factors as well as for other factors that may or may not be applicable to their case.
Applicants are granted points according to the following system:
- Qualifications
- Work Experience
- Offer of Employment
- Age
- Settlement Factors
Qualifications
Points are awarded for qualifications that the NZIS accepts as being equivalent to New Zealand post-secondary qualifications. Once can be allocated between 10 and 12 points for this factor.
The points you are granted are determined only if:
1. You obtained your qualifications from an institution recognized on the List of Recognized Qualifications; or
2. You obtain a suitable New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA) assessment report; or
3. You obtain occupational registration in New Zealand.
Generally, if you hold a degree of at least three years' duration and obtain a positive NZQA assessment, you will be granted 10 points.
If you hold an advanced qualification of at least a one-year duration, which builds on your base qualification, then you may be able to claim 11 points total for your qualifications.
If you hold a Master's degree, which was preceded by a Bachelor's degree, then you may be able to claim 12 points total for your qualifications.
If your qualification is not included on the List of Recognized Qualifications, then you will need to submit your qualifications for assessment by the NZQA.
Note: From 5 March 2001 onwards, an NZQA assessment will be a mandatory document that needs to be included in your application for migration to New Zealand under the General Skills category.
New Zealand Qualifications: In most cases, you can add two more points to your points score if you have completed a valid post-secondary qualification in New Zealand.
Work Experience
You can claim up to a maximum of 10 points for work experience - 1 (one) point for every two years of full-time employment. In most cases, you must be able to show that your work experience is relevant to the qualification for which you are claiming points unless you have a job offer in New Zealand.
For example, if you obtained your Bachelor's degree in Accounting in 1998 and you have worked as an Accountant since your degree was conferred, you will have two years of relevant work experience, for which you can claim one point. Even if you had worked full-time during your studies, you may not include those years of work experience in your points score. You may also not include any work experience in a field not relevant to your qualifications. The following exceptions and rules also apply:
If you have received points for a job offer, then you do not need to have your work experience relevant to your qualifications
You must claim a minimum of 1 point for work experience unless you have completed a recognized qualification in New Zealand.
You will not receive points for experience that was part of a course requirement of the qualification for which you are claiming points (i.e. for an internship, apprenticeship during studies, etc.)
You are granted points for work experience of 30 hours or more per week.
If the work experience was for less than 30 hours per week, points may be awarded on a pro rata basis
Offer of Employment
If you have a genuine offer of employment in New Zealand, then you should be able to claim 5 points.
The offer of employment must be:
a. For continuous employment with one specific employer;
b. Involving one or more contracts totaling at least 6 months, if the principal applicant has obtained
Points may be awarded for an offer of employment only if:
a. It is for full-time employment, and
b. Current at the time the application is submitted, and
c. Genuine, and
d. It is for a position that is paid by salary or wages (positions of self employment, payment by commission and/or retainer are not acceptable).
In addition, in order to claim points for this factor, you must obtain registration if required by law. If registration is not required, the employment must be relevant to the qualification for which you are claiming points.
Age
You must be between the ages of 18 and 56 to be eligible to apply for migration to New Zealand under this category. If you are age 56 and older, your application will be declined.
18 to 24 years -8 points
25 to 29 years -10 points
30 to 34 years -8 points
35 to 39 years -6 points
40 to 44 years -4 points
45 to 49 years -2 points
50 to 55 years -0 points

Settlement funds:
If you are able to transfer a minimum of NZ$ 100,000 in settlement funds (i.e. cash, shares, stocks, etc.) to New Zealand before your residence is granted, then you may be able to claim one point.
If you are able to transfer NZ$ 200,000 to the country, then you may be able to claim two points.
You need not transfer your funds to New Zealand until your application has been approved in principle. You will have six months from the date of approval to transfer the funds.
